Chasing Straights is a rock band based out of the Philadelphia area. Sam Capolongo founded the band in 2020, releasing the first EP “Hardly off the Ground” a year later. In 2021, current members Sean Gallagher and Nate Gittelman joined, creating a more diverse sound for their latest release “On to the Next One”.

Shamarr Allen

Shamarr Allen

Shamarr Allen from the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, and has influences in jazz, hip-hop, rock, funk rhythms, blues and country. Allen has collaborated with many renowned artists around the world such as Willie Nelson, Patti LaBelle, Galatic, Harrick Connick Jr, and Lenny Kravitz, to name a few. He is the True Orleans experience.

Judith Hill

Judith Hill

7:30 – 9:00 p.m

Judith Hill is likely the only musician who can cite Elton John, Spike Lee, Prince, and Michael Jackson among those who have sought out her talent. One of the highest-profile background singers of her generation, she has built a discography of increasingly refined albums that includes the Prince produced Back in Time. Hill starred in the Academy Award and GRAMMY winning film 20 Feet from Stardom.

DuPont Brass

DuPont Brass

9:15 – 10:30 p.m.

DuPont Brass is a one-of-a-kind, brass-driven supergroup from the D.C. Area and a 9-piece ensemble consisting of brass, a rhythm section, and vocalists. Through their training in classical and contemporary styles, DuPont Brass has developed a sound they’ve coined as “Eclectic Soul” that mixes varied genres of music, including jazz, hip-hop, and R&B.

Howard County Chinese School

Howard County Chinese School

Noon – 12:45 p.m.

The program includes music performances by young musicians and talented music students from Howard County Chinese School / Cultural Center. Among these young musicians, young virtuoso of Ocarina/Hulusi, will perform both traditional Chinese and classical music pieces. The HCCS Youth Ambassadors will also perform.

Wilde Lake Steel Drum Band

Wilde Lake Steel Drum Band

1:00 – 1:45 p.m.

The Wilde Lake High School Steel Drum Band is one of many performing ensembles that make up the Wilde Lake Band Program. The Wilde Lake High School Steel Drum Band is well known for its performances of a variety of music, from Calypso to Soca, as well as jazz.

Tray Wellington Band

2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

This high energy acoustic Newgrass group is led by banjo virtuoso, multi-time IBMA Award winner, and 2019 Momentum Instrumentalist of the year Tray Wellington. The group pushes the bounds of bluegrass music, incorporating Bossa Nova, Jazz, and Blues elements, to their originals to create a unique, new exciting sound.

Buffalo Nichols

Looking to bring the blues of the past into the future, Nichols has recently released his self-titled debut album and appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Nichols explains, “Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues.”

Glenelg Jazz Ensemble

Glenelg Jazz Ensemble

4:30 – 5:45 p.m.

The Glenelg Jazz Ensemble has received more than 60 awards over the last 20 years, including the highest rating at the Maryland State Jazz Festival. Many national and regional jazz artists have shared the stage with the Ensemble, including Maynard Ferguson, The Count Basie Orchestra, Frank Foster, Carl Fischer, Chris Vadala, and Deanna Bogart.

The Sidley’s

The Sidley’s have created a unique, yet universal, sound that has been described as high-energy, melodic, soul-influenced indie rock. They have performed at The Kennedy Center, The State Theater, Blues Alley, The Atlas Theater, The Barns at Wolf Trap, Arena Stage, and the Hamilton.

QUITAPENAS

This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s, 70s, and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and beyond. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a “pena” and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave you without a worry. The group is made up of first-generation sons of immigrant parents from Guatemala and Mexico.

Both on stage and in private life, these two internationally acclaimed artists share incredible chemistry! Their first introduction (lasting only a few seconds) in the crowded lobby of the historic Orpheum Theatre during the 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee left a lasting impression on both of them. It was not until a year later, at a recording session during 2019 IBC that their professional acquaintance blossomed into a love affair, culminating in marriage in August of 2019! Since that time, renowned Canadian Blues-Rocker Paul DesLauriers and acclaimed American Soul-Blues singer Annika Chambers have unified their artistic destiny, much to the joy of everyone who’s had the pleasure of hearing and seeing them together!

G4L: WLHS Step Team

The Wilde Lake High School Step Team, also known as ‘G4L,’ will start the day with an energetic step performance that seeks to represent Black music and culture in its rawest, most unapologetic form. Its members strive to live by the mantra: “Be Passionate. Be Giving. Be Excellent.”

April “Dancing Diva April” Williams owner of DJM Fitness, LLC, has been a line dance and group fitness instructor/choreographer for 13 years and has been a part of the Baltimore Line Dance Community for 23 years. Remember to always have fun and keep moving!

Debórah Bond has become an integral part of the fabric of the worldwide indie-soul scene. She has headlined packed houses around the US and EU including the Warner Theater, 9:30 Club, Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, and Blue Note NYC.

B. Funk has been serving Howard County for over 20 years. Located in Ellicott City, they offer a variety of instruction in many dance styles and gymnastics. They cater to the recreational to pre-professional dancer for ages 3-18. Adult classes also are available.

JoGo Project

The JoGo Project is a WAMMIE Award winning Jazz and Go-Go fusion band from Washington, DC founded by DC Native Elijah Jamal Balbed, who performed with the late, great Godfather of Go-Go Chuck Brown. The JoGo Project is dedicated as ever to keeping DC’s Go-Go music alive while also exploring new sounds and repertoire.

Delfeayo Marsalis

For Delfeayo Marsalis, music runs in his family, and it’s in his blood! Delfeayo is a GRAMMY award-winning trombonist, composer, and producer. He is “known for his technical excellence, inventive mind, and frequent touches of humor” (Los Angeles Times). Marsalis has toured internationally with jazz icons such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and Slide Hampton, as well as leading his own group.

What is The Columbia Festival of the Arts?

The Columbia Festival of the Arts is a multi-weekend event that celebrates music, art, and entertainment. Each Festival kicks off in June with Lakefest, a free, three-day outdoor celebration at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront. Lakefest includes live performances, children's creative activities, a juried fine arts and crafts show, a variety of hands-on workshops for all ages and outdoor festival food fare.

The days following LakeFest are comprised of a variety of free and ticketed events, including performances in multiple disciplines, master classes, workshops, fine art exhibitions, literary offerings, film and frequent opportunities to interact directly with artists.
