BIO
Gail Holliday was the official artist for the new city of Columbia, MD as it was being developed. James Rouse hired her in 1967 as a full-time artist for the Rouse Company.
As Columbia was being developed, Gail created posters for each Columbia neighborhood as it was built. These hung in the old Exhibit Center on Lake Kittamaqundi and in The Rouse Co. headquarters building. Gail also created metal “Poster Trees” that were displayed outside the Exhibit Center. She restored these in 2017 and they are now installed on the far side of Lake Kittamaqundi.
After leaving The Rouse Company, Gail went on to operate a successful sign-making and design studio called April Day Studios for many years. In fact, she designed many of the village and neighborhood entrance signs along Columbia’s roadways.
Gail Holliday is now retired and lives in Yuma, AZ. She is still painting, and you can see examples of her more recent work on her website.
